Hypnotherapy is an incredible modality that uses a natural mind-state called hypnosis to allow emotional, mental, and spiritual transformation. It works with your mind’s natural learning process, creating new neural pathways that bring into reality the life you truly desire. Hypnotherapy helps you to release old dysfunctional habits, beliefs, and behaviors and establish new ones that better align to your true self and the life you desire.
1. What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a safe and natural mind state that we experience everyday. It is simply a focused state of attention, a trance state. We go through the hypnotic mind state every time we fall asleep, it is that dreamy liminal state between sleep and wakefulness.
2. Is is safe?
Yes, hypnosis a completely natural and safe state of mind. You will remain awake, aware, and in control at all times. Hypnosis is a consensual practice, you actively choose to go into hypnosis and you can choose to come out at anytime.
3. How does hypnotherapy work?
Over 90% of our mind operates in the subconscious, which rules our habits, behavior and beliefs. The subconscious is designed to protect what is known and familiar. It will reject anything that doesn’t fit the established programming, even if you consciously know what would serve you better. This is why so many of us know what we “should” be doing, but find ourselves defaulting over and over to the old behavior.
It is nearly impossible to change this programming through willpower alone. Fortunately, through hypnosis the mind naturally relaxes the protective mechanism, opening the doorway between the conscious and subconscious mind so that you can rewrite your internal programming to better fit the life you know you want. Hypnotherapy leverages the power of imaginal experience in a heightened trance state to mentally rehearse the desired change, helping the subconscious mind recognize it as the normal, safe and familiar programming to run. This allows the change to come through more quickly, easily, and automatically. No more fighting against yourself!
4. How is it different from traditional talk therapy?
Traditional talk therapy relies primarily on conscious processing of beliefs, thoughts, memories, ideas etc. You talk and think about your issues with your therapist to gain deeper understanding.
Hypnotherapy focuses on the subconscious, where patterns, beliefs, habits, fears, behaviors, and patterns are stored long term. When you work directly with the subconscious part of the mind you can rewrite your internal programming so that it matches what you truly want.
5. Is there anytime I shouldn’t do hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy as a self improvement modality can be a wonderful complement to other therapies and can contribute to your overall wellness strategy, however it is is not a substitute for medical care or psychotherapy. Some conditions may require a medical or psychological referral. For anyone working with diagnoses or symptoms of dissociative disorders, schizophrenia, psychosis, and epilepsy; hypnosis is not appropriate as trance states can amplify symptoms. Please consult with your medical doctor or psychotherapist if you have any concerns about the compatibility of hypnotherapy.
6. What is a session like?
In each session we start by checking in to review goals, track real life progress, and understand the scope of your challenges around the issue. Entering hypnosis is much like listening to a guided meditation. You don’t need to do anything but relax and follow instructions. Hypnotherapy will focus on positive suggestions and clients generally leave a session feeling so much better than they did before. The end of the session concludes with a check in and review of any home practice for reinforcement and integration.
7. What do I need to prepare for my session?
Many people come to hypnotherapy with one or several goals in mind. Together we can determine which to prioritize as we get started. For virtual sessions you will just need a reliable internet connection, a device that can connect to video calls, and a comfortable, private place where you won’t be disturbed. Many people like to recline on a couch or bed for full relaxation.
8. Are virtual sessions effective?
Yes, virtual sessions are just as effective, if not even more so, than in office sessions. Participating from a space where you already feel safe, secure and relaxed means that you will be able to tap into your trance state more easily. Clients especially appreciate the ability to enjoy some self care and integration time after sessions.
9. How many sessions will I need?
This varies widely and many factors contribute. The complexity of the underlying issues, a person’s pace of integration, willingness to practice reinforcement between sessions, and one’s readiness to step into change all inform the process. I typically start clients with a package of 4 sessions, from there it will be more clear what, if more is needed.
10. So what can hypnotherapy help me with?
Hypnotherapy is especially good for self improvement goals. What has been limiting you? Getting in your way? Keeping you blocked? What is the thing you keep saying you KNOW you need to do but you still avoid doing it? Find freedom from your limitations, dissolve personal blocks, and truly align with your highest self.
